Van de Ven Double Ends Everton's Run at New Stadium

The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
