A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
